Turn Your Backyard Into a Garden Oasis

When you are creating and designing your backyard, you want it to be your own private oasis away from the prying eyes of the world. Many times, we get caught up in what the "Jones'" have done with their backyard and we try to emulate how they have created their own retreat. By doing this, we can lose sight of what we really want by trying too hard. Design can be seen all around and there is no better teacher than nature itself.

If you really like the tropical feel of the Hawaiian islands then you should definitely incorporate that into your backyard. Tropical islands are filled with life, from the sandy beaches to the mountain tops; they are an adventure waiting to be had. Tropical islands are filled with color. They have a wide array of contrasts, both dark and light, muted and bright that you can pull design elements from. You can easily incorporate grasses, exotic blooms, palm trees and fronds as well as water features to keep that tropical theme going through out your backyard.

If you like Asian inspired gardens then you can not go wrong with a bamboo garden. A nice feature of a bamboo garden is that they are a lot like evergreens since they very rarely lose their beautiful foliage or color. They are perfect for creating a sense of seclusion since bamboo can grow very fast and very thick in a very short amount of time. Bamboo is also a renewable resource and is best taken care of when it has been cut down several times. Design elements of an Asian inspired garden include paper lanterns, water features and ornamental grasses.

Nothing exemplifies Japanese culture better than a Bonsai garden. Bonsai plants are trees that have been cultivated to not grow bigger than their enclosure. Bonsai plants can come in miniature versions of trees, flowering plants and grasses. Place several bonsai plants as focal features for your Japanese bonsai garden. Another good idea is to place square sections of white sand where you can rake the sand into intricate patterns. Along with a few small water features, this will create a sense of peace, harmony and tranquility.

If you like the dry heat of the southwest, then you should think about creating a Cactus garden. Cactus come in many shapes and sizes and offer varying degrees of thorns depending on what type of cactus you buy. Cactus can produce fruit, flowers and water for many different types of birds. If you have a cactus garden, you can expect to have a lot of birds visiting on a regular basis. A good idea would be to incorporate some dried out cow skulls, white sand and brightly woven carpets to really inspire a southwest feel.

These are just a few ways that you can truly make your backyard your own oasis. Don't be typical and try to keep up with the Jones'. Be truly unique and let your personality shine through when you create your perfect backyard. You won't be sorry that you did.
