Make Your Bathroom Look More Spacious With New Lighting
Small bathrooms can look even smaller with improper lighting. Harsh fluorescent or large overhead lights will make the bathroom look smaller than it really is; adding more light to small spaces in an organized way is ideal. When you add bright lights to a bathroom, there are more opportunities for shadows being cast in the corners, making the bathroom seem smaller and darker than it really is. Proper positioning of new lights is important to consider.
If your bathroom is only equipped to handle a fluorescent light, there are ways that you can work with it to make your bathroom look more spacious. One such tip is to wallpaper the room with a vertical stripe. The light shining on the stripes will make the walls seem taller and make the room look more open.
Wall sconces are a great way to make a small bathroom seem larger because the lighting is shining upward, making the walls appear longer. The lighting is usually not as bright when coming from a sconce because the bulbs are smaller. This gives you the opportunity to illuminate those small corners and other dark spaces that are cast in shadow by a fluorescent light bulb.
Additional lighting will make the bathroom look bigger because all the small spaces are lit, leaving fewer shadows and more bright areas. Shadows can make the bath look smaller if there are too many- something that you want to avoid at all costs if your bathroom is already small.
Another helpful tip is to place new lights so that they can reflect off of the bathroom mirror. Mirrors are a great way to add new lighting to a small space because it will reflect lights to areas that are not as well lit, such as in corners, beside cabinets or next to the bathtub. If you can reflect the light, you will have a more spacious looking bathroom.
On a side note, even if you have a bunch of lights reflecting in mirrors all around the bathroom, your bathroom will never look spacious and large if your walls are a dark color. The darker the walls, the smaller and more confined the bathroom space is going to look. Using colors like off white, pale blues or mint greens will help to expand the feel of your bathroom. These colors can be paired easily with other fixtures in the bathroom, such as the sink, toilet, or shower stall.
Choose recessed lighting over floor lamps or table lamps in the bathroom. If your space is already small, adding a floor lamp or cluttering the counter top with a lamp will only use up valuable space. Additionally, a lampshade can have the opposite effect that you were hoping for because it will reduce the amount of exposed lighting. Recessed lighting will not take up as much space and can be far less expensive than more traditional lamps.
